I blame it on the subs that you are confused about their relationships with each other. I mean , in the drama they call each other things like older brother, older sister and things like this but the subs put just their names instead of all of these so you don't get the level of intimacy between them and get confused even about the family members.

In the world of untamed, most people have 2 names, some even 3. The first name is their birth name. Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are their birth names. Second name is the courtesy name which is a more formal one. People usually use the courtesy name to address or call strangers. Good rule of thumb to remember which name is the birth name and which is the courtesy name: the longer the name, the more formal it is. Birth names are mostly (Clan name)+one syllable (Lan Zhan, Wei Ying) courtesy names are 2 syllables (Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian)

regarding the Names culture: they all have 2 Names: one given at birth and used as you are child by your parent and close ones. The second name is the official honour name that you get when you are not a child anymore and is used by everyone. To call someone by his given at birth name is considered intimate or impolite. Depends who is saying it. Like Lan Wangji is the honour name and the given at birth name is Lan Zhan. Everyone, even his older brother call him Wangji. Only Wei Wuxian calls him Lan Zhan.

I think you should watch another subtitle this one doesn’t translate literally , like they just put the names instead of the terms like brother or sister cuz you still confused ,Weiying literally calling yanli sister or senior sister but I don’t know how you didn’t realize Weiying and yanli ‘s relationship at this point 😅.

A little explanation that might help identify character: People from the Lan Clan like Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen wear the white forehead ribbons and mostly white and light blue clothes. People from the Jin Clan which includes Peacock Dude (Jin Guangyao) often have a red dot on their forehead and wear mostly orange and yellow tones. People from the Jiang Clan which Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are from mostly wear purple and blue tones with Wei Wuxian being a slight exception because he tends to mix the blue with darker colors. The Wen Clan can be recognized by their characteristic red clothing, example Wen Ning and Wen Qing. There are others Clans, but those are the most important ones when it comes to recognizing them onscreen.
